Obesity Concerns Rise

Recent news underlines the importance of early childhood programs addressing obesity. A new report from the Centers for Disease Control in the journal, Cancer, attributes a rise in cancer due to obesity and inactivity. Even though the incidence of cancer is declining overall, there is an increase in the numbers of cancer cases associated with excess weight and sedentary lifestyle.
According to the report, about 1/3 of adults in the U.S. are obese (30 or more pounds over a healthy weight). The report concludes, "Maintaining a healthy weight and getting sufficient exercise may be among the most important ways to prevent cancer."

I am concerned as everyone is about childhood obesity. However I am also concerned about the many overweight teachers I see taking care of these young children. As a field we need to be healthy so that we can provide an appropriate role model, especially in being able to move around easily.
(I have struggled to control my weight my entire life. However I do exercise and try to eat well and move.) But I have been in many centers in the last couple of years where I have seen obese teachers which worries me about their ability to move around with the children.
It is my opinion that we as a field need to make a commitment to healthy life styles.
