Wisdom of Fred Rogers
March 11, 2016
If you really want to make a friend, go to someone's house and eat with him...the people who give you their food give you their heart.
-Cesar Chavez

Kirsten Haugen discovered 20 quotes from Fred Rogers on a site with the odd name Popsugar.  Here are my favorites:

"Mutual caring relationships require kindness and patience, tolerance, optimism, joy in the other's achievements, confidence in oneself, and the ability to give without undue thought of gain."

"The thing I remember best about successful people I've met all through the years is their obvious delight in what they're doing and it seems to have very little to do with worldly success.  They just love what they're doing, and they love it in front of others."

"There is no normal life that is free of pain.  It's the very wrestling with our problems that can be the impetus for our growth."

"How great it is when we come to know that times of disappointment can be followed by joy; that guilt over falling short of our ideals can be replaced by pride in doing all that we can; and that anger can be channeled into creative achievements . . . and into dreams that we can make come true."

"There are three ways to ultimate success:  The first way is to be kind.  The second way is to be kind.  The third way is to be kind."

These quotes feel like an antidote to the current political climate in the US. And who can argue with Mr. Rogers, right?

The first quote regarding mutual caring relationships is spot on and so very important to remember not only in life but especially when working with children.

My favorite lesson from Mr Rogers is, "what's mention-able is manageable." I use it all the time.

Love it! My favorite is the last one. I see a thread of empathy in Mr. Roger's words.

No wonder it was always a beautiful day in his neighborhood.

I always sat with my three daughters when Mr. Rogers was on. I remember that we all watched quietly, together. There were parts of the show I just never connected to, and yet I rarely missed a group viewing. I miss Fred Rogers.
