I Am a Brain Builder
December 6, 2016
There are no shortcuts to any place worth going.
-Beverly Sills, 1929 – 2007, American operatic soprano

In her presentation at the KinderCare Teacher Awards gathering during the NAEYC 2016 Conference, Susan Perry-Manning, the new executive director of the Early Care and Education Consortium, talked about the critical role of teachers.

“As we all are now very aware, business and military leaders, law enforcement officials, and policymakers around the country continue to call for greater investments in early learning because they understand the link between early learning and our shared success.

“So the next time someone asks you what you do, you might say you are teachers and caregivers for our next generation of leaders who will solve our world problems or you might say that you…

  • Build brains for a living, or
  • Create our future workforce, or
  • Fuel our nation’s economic prosperity, or
  • Protect our national security!”

This is what I do---I care for the children in my class. I listen to them, I play their games with them, I try to help them handle difficulties in the classroom, I talk to them, I share my stories with them. We laugh, sing, paint, build, create and we are silly. I value the time I spend with them --you never get this time back again---stop with the future work force talk---take care of the child today!

I think this is kind of silly. If asked, I would say. "We care for and educate children at their most impressionable and vulnerable age, and when the foundation for their entire future is being created, but our job is made far more difficult because everyone wants to tell us how to do our jobs, we get paid almost nothing, and policymakers have no clue! In truth, we get no respect!"
