Today is Loving Day
June 12, 2023
Beneath the Veil lay right and wrong, vengeance and love, and sometimes throwing aside the veil, a soul of sweet Beauty and Truth stood revealed.
-W. E. B. Du Bois, Black Reconstruction in America
Seeing each child, every family, runs the gamut from tapping into curiosity, care and connection in our daily encounters all the way to advocating for and protecting policies that ensure a foundation for respect, understanding and belonging for all.

Francis Wardle, author of Oh Boy! and one of our most reliable commenters on ExchangeEveryDay, is a champion for highlighting perspectives and experiences the rest of us may miss. He wrote to me recently:

I wanted to let you know – or remind you – that June 12 is National Loving Day. It’s the annual celebration of the anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court decision of 1967 that overturned 16 existing state laws against interracial marriage. It’s called Loving Day because the decision is Loving v. Virginia, and the couple involved was Mildred and Richard Loving. 1967 is not a long time ago. My wife [Ruth E. Benjamin-Wardle] and I married in 1976, less than ten years after the decision. Interracial marriage and multiracial children are the centerpiece of racial equality, which is why I am so very sensitive about any retreat from the bitterly fought victories of racial equality and integration in this country, particularly in education.
Thanks, Francis Wardle, PhD

May Loving Day be a loving and lovely reminder for heightened awareness, action and connection for all, especially for and with multiracial children and their families.
