Babies
November 16, 2010
A cold is both positive and negative; sometimes the Eyes have it and sometimes the Nose.
-William Lyon Phelps

I am sure that by now all but 5 of ExchangeEveryDay's 80,000 readers have viewed the documentary, Babies.  But Bonnie finally convinced me to view it last week and I was blown away.  It follows four babies from Japan, Namibia, Mongolia, and the United States from birth through babyhood.

One of the great things about the movie is that there is zero narration.  So for the entire 80 minutes you are simply observing babies in their very diverse settings, without being instructed or preached to.  This film would be a great discussion provoker among any group of early childhood professionals, a great way to analyze your basic assumptions about early education.

Being with Babies: Understanding and Responding to the Infants in Your Care is a great resource for both beginning and experienced caregivers. Each chapter describes an issue that caregivers face daily, offers scenarios that illustrate the challenge, suggests solutions caregivers can use to address the issue, and concludes with a review of key points.  Being with Babies teaches caregivers how to handle everyday challenges while learning about developmental stages. This hands-on resource is perfect for caregivers of children 6 weeks to 18 months old, as well as for staff development and resource libraries.  Chapters include information on:

  • Developing relationships with babies
  • Using observation to understand babies
  • Communicating with babies
  • Selecting appropriate toys
  • Setting up safe and effective learning environments for babies

I used the movie "Babies" as a training tape with my staff on quintessential Observation & Recording because there is no narration. We trained a staff of 43 in small groups on multiple TV's in our larger site and had discussion. They got it! They shared what they saw in terms of Development, Culture, Parenting, etc. Highly recommend! Several colleagues did the same.

Oh, sorry---my previous comment asked where to view the whole 80 min. I did not read beyond clicking to see the clip. After, I went back to the site and read how to see the whole 80 min!! And I accuse my students of not reading!!! Hummmmm...

Well, I must be one of the 5 who have not seen this! Thanks for directing me to this wonderful resource. It reminds me of the book, "From a Child's Side"--I think was the title---very few words---many pictures of children all over the world.

When I clicked on Babies all I saw was a short clip. How/Where do you see the whole 80 min.?

Thank you again for this information about "Babies"!
