Bringing Reggio to the US

In today's World Forum Radio segment, our intrepid correspondent, Michael Kalinowski, interviews Susan Lyon. Susan was intrigued by a small child's conception of the word "city", and began pondering how children think, eventually visiting Reggio Emilia and then bringing the "The Hundred Languages of Children" exhibit to the San Francisco Bay area on two occasions. She initiated the Innovative Teacher Project, and began working with the Presidio Child Care Center and the San Francisco public schools. Currently she is working with an Italian architect to rehab a San Francisco structure into the first Italian immersion preschool.

Nice that an Italian Immersion is starting in San Fransico. Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) has very successful Immersion Schools, French, Spanish & German, which are 30yrs. strong. The MPS Italian Immersion is newer, less than 5 years old. There are plans to start a Hmong Immersion program, in the future. The French Immersion program (5th graders) is currently in Salon de Provence, France. The children leave the program bilingual. They score off the charts in testing on local, state & federal assessments. These are not children of the economically elite, but typical children of urban Milwaukee. Using language as a tool for learning enhances brain development, opens doors for cross cultural integrations and enhances academic achievement levels. We have started a Chinese duo language program in Houghton, MI very north on Lake Superior to meet community needs. Bravo! for starting the progam in San Francisco.
