Cantankerous People
July 5, 2011
Children should believe they can soar. Always. Period. Hallelujah!
-Deborah Bergeron, National Head Start Association
How do you work with cantankerous people, "people who can make life at work a miserable experience?"  In their article, "Disarming Cantankerous People," which is included in the latest Exchange Essentials collection of digital articles, "Dealing with Difficult People," Luis Hernandez and Connie Jo Smith, after outlining some methods for dealing with difficult people, offer this caution...

"Part of this work is also a self-reflection of how we see others and how our own values and beliefs affect our relationships and interactions.  Is the person that bugs you truly difficult or is he just different?  Workplaces are increasingly diverse; we have class differences, ethnicities, languages, cultures, genders, religions, and other diversity factors.  Truly, what we may find difficult may depend on the context of the situation and our worldview.  A little self-reflection will help you create a greater balance in dealing with all of your coworkers."

Cantankerous does not equal diverse. There is a hidden message here that diversity presents extra challenges and that a person different from onself is hard to get along with. The summary is no help, and I would be surprised if the artlcle is helpful. In fact, I find it negative.
