Selecting Books for Children
August 31, 2011
In a conversation, keep in mind that you're more interested in what you have to say than anyone else is.
-Andrew A. Rooney in Pieces of My Mind
In the Exchange Beginnings Workshop set of articles, "Building Literacy," Leah Curry-Rood, offered these characteristics of good books for children...

  • The story must be enjoyable to young children and capture their attention in the first couple of pages.
  • The text and illustrations must work together on the same page.
  • The story should stimulate the child's imagination.
  • A sense of self-worth should be encouraged in the story.
  • A wide range of family lifestyles and cultures should be included in book selections.
  • A variety of artistic styles should be evidenced in a quality picture book collection.
  • Stories should encourage independence and celebrate competency in children.
