Nature Restores
September 1, 2011
Freedom makes a huge requirement of every human being. With freedom comes responsibility.
-Eleanor Roosevelt
"The exposure to nature restores our cognitive functions, enabling us to concentrate better," writes Stephan Mayer, professor of psychology at Oberlin University in Ode Magazine (September 2011).

In one experiment that convinced Mayer of the restorative value of nature, Mayer assigned students to focus on solving a problem.  The group was split into three sections: one spent time in nature, another watched a nature video, while the third watched a video filmed in an urban area.

The result: "The group that spent time in nature was able to solve the problem, while the other two groups didn't show much progress."

The Learning With Nature DVD provides examples of Nature Explore Classrooms that have been designed around the country.  Discover techniques for using outdoor classrooms as an integral part of preschool and elementary children's daily learning.  See how well-designed outdoor spaces facilitate children's overall development in traditional academic areas.  As you watch footage from a variety of settings and hear stories from educators, you will gain new insight into ways to help children make deeper connections with the natural world.

This is just the link we need for today. Meeting at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (where I live and work as a teacher) The participants at the world forum from UK, in Honolulu in May are gathering this afternoon.
Kew is a World Heritage Site that promotes the links with nature.....that will restore bio diversity, conserve the wilderness and help people to know that their part in the ecology of the planet is important now and forever. I help children to notice nature, look closely and explore big spaces. Sadly many children get a limited opportunity for even going out of doors while at school, there is no legal entitlement for this un UK!!!!!
Many thousands only have outdoor sites that are woefully degraded by aviation pollution, noise incessantly disturbs communication, the air pollution is hazardous and levels of all the pollutants are above WHO Guidelines.
This amounts to Child Abuse on and Industrial Level by the Aviation Industry.
Today, with a strong East wind, planes are not overflying Kew Gardens, but with the West normally prevailing wind our gathering would find it hard to speak with each other or hear the sounds of nature.
We are working at making the polluter pay for transport from noisy sites, to nearby but not overflown, for seasonal outdoor enjoyment in a quiet natural setting.
More perhaps after the gathering. Greetings and thanks, Julia Welchman

Thank for the article. I live in Africa and Uganda, the Pearl, that is "Gifted by nature" True there are people that are able to do great things and to contribute to global events but we have majority that are unable to solve life's problems and living in abject poverty. This tells me that there are other ingredients that make use exposure to nature a great contributing factor.
