Principles of Collaboration
November 30, 2011
I don't carry a compass, mostly because I tend to disagree with it.
-Matt Swanson
In the newest addition to the Exchange Store, Circle of Influence:  Implementing Shared Decision Making and Participative Management, Paula Jorde Bloom proposes three principles of collaboration in early childhood programs:

  • The whole is greater than the sum of the parts... Participative management is based on the belief that when more people participate, a synergistic effect increases the possibility of better decisions.

  • People have a right to be involved in making decisions that affect their lives... Research supports the proposition that when teachers are given the opportunity to participate in making decisions that affect them, they experience greater job satisfaction and higher morale.  They also tend to hold a higher opinion of their supervisors.

  • People involved in making decisions have a greater stake in carrying out those decisions than do individuals who are not... Effective leaders know that how decisions are made can have a more lasting impact on people's attitudes about work that the actual decision itself.
