How sad is it that we have come to this!? I am reminded of the movie "Babies" and how diverse our world is when it comes to child birth and child rearing. When will the madness of capitalization and economic disparity ever end?

What a heartrending contrast to the desperate conditions of obstetric care and training in places like Afghanistan. I can't imagine how many lives would be saved there and elsewhere by $3800 toward simple supplies, training or medications.
In evidence is the 2007 documentary "Motherland Afghanistan," on the state of obstetric care in Afghanistan and one Afghani-American OB-Gyn's efforts to make a difference (see links at end of comment):
"Afghani-American filmmaker Sedika Mojadidi shadows her father, a women's health specialist working to rebuild hospitals in war-torn Afghanistan, in this thought-provoking documentary filmed in the wake of the United States' invasion of the region. In a country where one in seven women dies during childbirth, many women are willing to travel for days to receive adequate care from a trained professional."

I cannot resist commenting on the quote from Bertrand Russell from 1926. The concept of leveling the playing field has been around, virtually, forever. Head Start was created to achieve that. State preschools were developed to achieve that. Clearly, in spite of the best intentions of government, unless parents take responsibility for the education, health, nutrition, goal setting and instilling appropriate social values in their children, the time, effort and money exhausted on this goal is not an investment in a brighter future, but a failure to realize where resources are best placed.
