Listening to Parents
July 20, 2012
The fundamental job of a toddler is to rule the universe.
-Lawrence Kutner

In her Exchange article, "Listening to Parents Translates into More Referrals," Jo Kirchner observes...

"Today’s child care and early education landscape has vastly changed from a few years ago; parents have more choices and they are better informed.  More than ever before, it is important to hear what parents tell you they are searching for and to act on the specific information provided.  When it comes to finding the right provider for their children, parents listen and learn from other parents.  Word of mouth is considered to be one of the most trusted resources for parents in the decision-making process when selecting child care.  It pays to listen!

"...Few people could have anticipated the rising unemployment rates in communities across the nation in the past few years, or the resulting impact on school enrollments.  The economic challenges have reminded everyone of what’s really important: to make a valued difference in the lives of children and their families
each day.  One of the basic tenets in serving parents is a dedication to establishing trusted relationships with parents and to partner with them in providing a strong foundation for their children’s future success in learning and in life."

I strongly agree that it pays to listen to parents talk about what they want for their child. I also think it is equally important to set up a dialogue with parents about what is developmentally appropriate, how kids learn and thrive best, and what is really going on in a child's earliest years.

Much of what they learn from other parents reflects our societal push for early academics, fears for the future and lack of awareness of the more subtle but delightful pieces of running a top notch childcare program.

I find that parents are really happy to have a professional help them get in touch with this, and thrilled to find a place in a program which offers something they didn't know they wanted.
