The having of ideas is a wonderful, joyful thing; and Roger and I delight in brainstorming. We’ve shared our life and work for over 50 years, so we know each other pretty well. Along our journey we’ve been aware that sharing so much enables us to respectfully share ideas and perspectives, thoughtfully navigate differing opinions and effectively find our decisions. We are safe with each other. Great. But after a while, thinking with your spouse, your family, or a particular school or organization, conversations start to go in circles, spiraling back and around and ending up in the same place. 

For Roger and I, our way out of the spiral was to reach out to people we didn’t know—people who live differently and in different places, people who are dissimilar from us by culture, life experiences, life choices, happenstance. As our work began with Exchange, we reached out to directors across the United States and created the Panel of 100 to guide the magazine. We created Directors’ Network conferences to access new perspectives and create a broader community. And then we began to connect with people around the world and were inspired to build the World Forum on Early ...
