No matter where you live or which center you work in, you can look throughout the classrooms and smile knowing you have a wonderful group of children, all of whom come from different backgrounds and help make your center a diverse environment. As part of our work in early childhood and early care, it is important not only to have a diverse group of children enrolled in the center, but to truly understand how to best work with them—not only as a whole, but with each child as an individual as well. We need to embrace the multicultural education approach and have a solid understanding of what it means in action. “Diversity or multicultural education is a continuous approach to working with children, parents, families and colleagues every day” (Wardle, 2003). It goes beyond embracing the different backgrounds of the families; it is a way of teaching that aims to help all children grow, as it works to promote diversity and inclusion and directly impacts the social-emotional growth of all.
