One of the joys of serving as Exchange publisher is the opportunity to have insightful conversations with so many caring and accomplished leaders in our field. Sometimes when I am feeling bombarded by news of disheartening situations near and far, talking to people like Rachel Robertson and Heidi Hagel-Braid reminds me of what is right with the world. Rachel is both an innovative, forward-thinker as well as a practical solution-finder (as is Bright Horizons, the organization she works for as Vice President, Education and Development.)

Heidi, director of national programs at First Children’s Finance, is a big-picture systems thinker. Her work is bringing help to hundreds of directors who are interested in learning new strategies for effective financial management of their programs.

Interestingly, neither Rachel nor Heidi began their careers expecting to become a prominent early childhood leader. Heidi’s first job was working on the issue of domestic violence. Her work often brought her to emergency rooms in the middle of the night. It was at those times that she began wanting to work in a field that could have a big impact on strengthening families from the very beginning. This desire led her to early care and education.
