As I sat huddled around a table among my child care center leadership team in January buzzing with ideas, strategy and action plans for the new year, I felt a wave of overwhelming determination and clarity. My team was on fire and I knew they had the courage to see our plans through. We left that planning meeting with rock solid short- and long-term goals, completed marketing plans and sound budgets that would guide my four child care centers in 2020 with clear intentions.

Nonetheless, deep in my gut there was a tiny warning bell going off that a change would be coming. Some of my recent child care leadership conferences were discussing “recession-proofing your business.” Knowing I had gone through an anguished struggle to get my child care centers to the other side of the belly of the 2008 recession, I knew I had to be smarter this time. We were speculating months—maybe even a year or more—before a change in the economy would start its sweep.
