Stories have been valued in all societies throughout human history as an important medium of transmission of knowledge and attitude from one generation to another. The impact of stories and storytelling on children and how their thinking and perceptions of reality are shaped is even more profound. As Gargiulo’s (2006) notes emphasize, stories are the most profoundly social form of human interaction, communication and learning, and also aid with storing, retrieving and conveying information. Storytelling is said to have strong impact on relationship building and intergenerational connection within families and other contexts. In fact, children learn about their identity, culture, beliefs, values, and attitudes through stories. Scholars and children’s literature agree that stories of any kind are fundamental to children’s learning about the world in which they grow up and how they engage with others in a particular social context, besides the enormous impact on the development of language and literacy skills. 

Stories also evoke emotions. There are stories that make us laugh, as well as stories that make us cry.
