“Remember how I was a superhero?” Mark calls out to me amid the cacophony of Earth Class’s chatty lunch time. 

“Of course I do, Mark!” I respond. “Would you like me to tell that story to your friends?” 

Mark is new to the classroom and is having some trouble figuring out how to break into the intimate relationships that have formed among the rest of the children in their two years together. They often perceive him as a ‘bad guy’ because of his impulsivity and cast him in that role during play. The noisy lunch area instantly quiets as I murmur the word story, every member of the class anticipating something special. Their classroom teacher, Jen, nods at me across the lunch area. The Earth Class has a culture of storytelling. They know that stories hold a deeper and more truthful truth than facts.
