Thirty-Second Annual Status Report on For-Profit Child Care: Demand Booming, but Teacher Pool Shrinking

Growth and staffing were the two most popular words used by CEOs in our annual Top 50 survey of the largest for-profit child care providers in the United States. In the 32 years Exchange has been following the for-profit child care niche, this cycle has been repeated often—when the economy is booming and unemployment is declining, the demand for child care rises, but the supply of qualified teachers declines. 

Growth is a Common Theme

Nearly all the Top 50 for-profit organizations surveyed (see table on page 78) reported increasing demand for their services and plans to grow their businesses. Here is what they are saying…

“Positive economic outlooks have been at the center of this increased demand. More of our customers are not only back to work but are actually working in careers that match their skill set, which is creating consumer confidence.” Ted Hockenberry, Children of America
