Other Transitions

Children in out of home care and early education programs experience other transitions besides the first transition to school. Transitions such as those from home to school and then back to home, from a combined classroom to a home base classroom, from the cafeteria to the classroom, from inside to outside can be difficult for some children.

The separation and reunion process is usually highly individual. Some children have a difficult time saying goodbye, or reconnecting at the end of the day. For these children, routines need to be ritualized so that the child knows what to expect each morning and afternoon. Helping family members understand that transition can’t be rushed is a good place to start. Suggest that parents plan to spend five or ten minutes with their child before leaving for work and another five or ten minutes before leaving for home after reuniting. Encourage family members to always say goodbye, reminding their children that they will return at the end of the day.
