I was astounded by the work week, school week, and vacation, or lack of, when we visited in Japan. This would be interesting to compare to Asia also.

This is not a surprise to me. My mother, who has lived in Spain for more than 20 years, always says, "Europeans work to live; Americans live to work."

I am even surprised to know the average Americans get 4wks vacations. I work with children and if we would allow it some parents would send their children to us on weekends. People work so many hours that when they are off they have little time to even clean the place they are living in. They can't even get a few hours break and if they do no cleaning can be done and all sorts of health hazards are deveoped in the home. People who has children in day care always blaim the dc for their child ill- health. No time for self, no time for play, no time for our children and this impack our society in a very distructive way- SOCIAL SKILLS

That's interesting! I am not aware of very many people--other than those who are retired--who take four weeks vacation per year here in the States. I wonder if the study was of a cross-section of incomes and age groups?
