Window of Opportunity Video
October 21, 2011
A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle.
-James Keller, 1900-1977, American priest
“Recent census data make it abundantly clear how dire the situation is for families struggling to provide for their children.  For five decades, Head Start has supported the American Dream by providing a window of opportunity for our most vulnerable children and placing them squarely on a path to lifelong success.”

NHSA director Yasmina Vinci made these remarks last week at a "Windows of Opportunity" celebration at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.  The evening focused on the enormous and burgeoning need for quality early childhood services as more Americans slip into poverty while battling devastating unemployment.  With 46 million people living below the poverty line, including one in four children under age six, Vinci pointed out that "Head Start is a lifeline to almost one million poor and at-risk children each year."

As part of part of a national effort to underscore the importance of investing in early childhood education, NHSA previewed “One Window of Opportunity" an original, two-minute animated video, capturing a child’s perspective of the vast possibilities Head Start offers America’s youngest minds.  Produced by creative agency SS&K and narrated by Maria Shriver, the animated video spotlights the critical window of opportunity in the first five years of life, during which essential cognitive, social, and emotional development occurs.

We were pleased to offer the idea of good early childhood experiences as a window of opportunity for brain development for all children, and of Head Start as that special window of opportunity for the most vulnerable children. From research we know that quality early experiences are important for all children but make even more difference for the children who are at-risk.

We encourage the early childhood community to use the video in many ways to advocate for ECE. Please contact us for additional ideas.
