The Story of Karthik
The year 2017, November 23rd was the happiest day of my life, when my child Karthik was born after a smooth pregnancy followed by a normal delivery with no history of birth trauma. A day to remember! We took Karthik home into a conventional joint family system. Three years passed in a tizzy, bringing up and caring for a tiny bundle of joy. Never noticed anything amiss! We were so busy providing for his growing up. Only few days back, one of my neighbourhood friends pointed out that Karthik does not talk much, in comparison to children of his age.
I defended by saying, “He is just very shy.” I pushed the undesirable thought aside, just like many other days. But for once I thought hard and saw that other children in the park were making conversations with their caretakers, looking, arguing, crying, tugging, smiling and expressing. I looked at Karthik, he looked so beautiful, but he wasn’t looking anywhere, did not have any words, hardly smiled but enjoyed flapping his arms over and over again.
