I recommend reading David Brooks' column in the NY Times July 29, 2008 about the biggest issue facing our country today - education, it's decline, the deterioration of family environments, the importance of early education. He refers to 2 studies, one by James Heckman of the University of Chicago who points to important traits that start and build in the early years- motivation levels, emotional stability, self-control and sociability.
