Empowering Your Inner Optimist
December 9, 2008
The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.
-Alan Watts, British philosopher
Researchers around the world have found that simply by consciously assuming an upright, confident, cheerful stance, you can empower the optimist within you. In an article in Work & Family Life (November 2008), French researcher Paula Nicdenthal observed, "People with their chins down and their shoulders rounded are going to be less receptive to potentially good information."

The article points out that there is a scientific explanation for the link between posture and emotions. Neurons involved in sensation, motor functions, and emotional memories are interconnected. For example, the simple act of smiling can activate the emotional state that a smile typically accompanies. In other words, when you put on a grin you are sending a message to your neurons telling them to mimic those patterns they create when your smile is natural and uncontrolled. By putting on an act for others to see, you may end up changing yourself.

Thanks! I needed that today. The sky is dark, the news is bad, the workload daunting. Shoulders back, head up, smile! It may beat coffee as an antidote.
