Building a Tree Circle
February 23, 2009
The creative adult is the child who survived.
-Ursula Leguin
In the January issue of Exchange, Rusty Keeler contributed the article, "A Spring Playscape Project: Building a Tree Circle", which he introduces with...

"If you are dreaming of adding nature to your yard, this project may be perfect for you. The Tree Circle is a green gathering area for children made by planting trees in a circle. For children, the Tree Circle becomes a magical place for dramatic play, quiet retreat, or lively nature exploration. For teachers and parents it becomes a shady grove for snacks and stories. The trees create a sweet spot that changes during the seasons and grows over time. A beautiful addition to a child’s life — and yours too!"

You can read Rusty's instructions on how to build the tree circle in its entirety for free on the Exchange website.

Rusty Keeler has compiled a life's work of his ideas into his beautiful book, Natural Playscapes: Creating Outdoor Play Environments for the Soul. This book is about a new movement in children’s outdoor play areas, natural playscapes, where the entire space is filled with art, hills, pathways, trees, herbs, open areas, sand, water, music, and more.... This magnificent 316-page resource contains close to 500 color photographs and illustrations.

This is a great idea! Years ago we had the opportunity to "design" a large open grassy area. We, along with parent volunteers, planted forsythia bushes in a large square, with one opening. It is beautiful, easy to care for, and the children use it in ways that stretch everyone's imagination!

I think the tree circle is a wonderful idea for children, wish I could implement it in my school. But most schools dont have the space or resources like my school.
