Foundations Feeling the Pinch
March 31, 2009
I don’t think of all the misery, but the beauty that still remains.
-Anne Frank
A survey of leading foundations funding educational projects found that nearly two-thirds of these foundations are scaling back their contributions this year due to the hit their assets have taken in the current economy. One major exception is the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation whose donations will increase by 10% in 2009. Here are the current assets of the leading foundations and how much these assets have decreased in the last year as reported in Education Week (March 18, 2009):

Foundation Assets
(in billions)
Change
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation $31.0 -20%
Ford Foundation 9.5 -30%
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation 8.0 -23%
W.K. Kellog Foundation 6.4 -22%
Lilly Endowment 5.5 -26%
John and Catherine MacArthur Foundation 5.2 -24%
Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation 4.8 -25%
David and Lucille Packard Foundation 4.4 -33%

First, I love the daily updates and do share them as I see beneficial.
Secondly, in today's article on funding the paragraph says that Bill and Milinda Gates will increase funding, but the chart says there is a decrease. Am I not understanding?
