ECE in the 2012 Election
August 31, 2012
When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us.
-Helen Keller
"Early Childhood Education Not Marque Campaign Issue," proclaimed an article in Education Week (August 8, 2012).  The article contends...

"Of all the issues aired at a
National Journal-hosted event on early childhood education recently, one theme resounded more than any other:  Politicians, and by extension, the people who vote for them, don't see early learning as a priority.  That's the case despite broad agreement across the political spectrum that investing both public and private dollars in early childhood programs pays numerous dividends down the line....

"Panelist Michael Castle, a former Republican governor of Delaware and nine-term congressman, put some of the blame on the media, saying that it 'has just not done a good job' of covering the importance of early learning, and the direct connections to the long-term health of the economy.  Reporters on the campaign trail ought to be asking about early childhood, but they don't," he said.

"[Another panelist, Arthur] Rolnick offered what is the most likely reason: Kids who stand to benefit most from public investments in early-childhood programs are years away from voting and often come from households where the adults are unlikely to trek to the polls on Election Day."

Hello, loved hearing about Mitt Romney's business support of "Bright Horizons" early childhood centers. Also the focus on children and family is very apparent as the Presidential campaign unfolds. I am hoping we can work on the "No Child Left Behind" legislation once he and Ryan are in the White House. Thank goodness for elections. New people bring new ideas to the forefront and allow for things to move forward in a positive way. New ideas and work come from each President. I love Michelle Obamas' focus on health and organic gardening. I like the Exchange idea...getting media to talk about Early Childhood and it's importance on the economy, etc. etc. Healthy children, healthy communities.

The entire development of children prior to birth; birth to 3; Prek-2nd grade and 3-5 are ignored in regards to the importance and prioritie$ that $hould be placed on quality human development. The philosophical beliefs and facts of a few educational giants sum up many things of life. Greeks -"A fit body creates a fit mind". How much time is spent by children/parents/adult decision makers to provide quality physical sensory-motor-perceptual development? John Dewy and Jerome Brunner explain "constructivism" as how people learn and develop knowledge of the world through having enriched environments to experience and create personal knowledge and applications of memory. B.F. Skinner as a behaviorist said, "Give me a child of normal physical and mental abilities and I can control the environment to make them what I want them to be." (Scary thought but so true. ESPECIALLY in a world that is not addressing poverty and violent households fueled by drugs and alcohol abuse and other degrees of neglect!!) Last but not least Jean Piaget told us higher orrder thinking skills are rooted in the development of sensory-motor-perceptual skills. Pretty sad when adult decision makers spend time ignoring the development of humanity and the mass media collaborates with them to create smoke&mirrors to decieve the human race world-wide while controlling money markets; wars; taxes that favor the earthly rich. Cynical? Yes, to some degree; you only know what they let you know and you can only develop to the level they let you develop. Thank GOD for real missionaries in the under developed countries and the street missionaries of under served neighborhoods. Government$ and Ma$$ media really do not care about anything but the money they have; control and manipulate.
