A Community of Anti-Bias Advocates
October 6, 2017
Life is your seesaw. You may not stay balanced long, but you can aim for a high after every low.
-Dr. Sanita Belgrave, Family Medicine Specialist and World Literacy Ambassador for Barbados

In her recent article, "Keeping On," in Exchange magazine (September/October 2017), Louise Derman-Sparks, a long-time anti-bias education advocate, urges everyone committed to working for equity and equality in early childhood education to create a community of like-minded people who can serve as a support to each other. She explains the community this way:

"The people in our 'anti-bias village' help us in a myriad of ways. They:

  • tell us what we are doing well – and what we need to do better.
  • help us problem-solve and lift us up when we are stuck.
  • teach us new information and insights as we teach them.
  • help us juggle a sense of urgency with staying strategic; and to reenergize when we feel depleted.
  • remind us about why we do anti-bias education when we feel momentarily overwhelmed or over-powered.
  • celebrate small changes and accomplishments with us; some changes are big and they need to be celebrated as well."
