“Native to New Guinea, the bowerbird may seem like an unlikely role model for teachers” writes Sandra Duncan, Jody Martin and Rebecca Kreth in their book, Rethinking the Classroom Landscape: Creating Environments that Connect Young Children, Families and Communities.

“This amazing avian artist and architect goes to extraordinary lengths to build and decorate his nest or bower…Dedicated to creating a welcoming and inviting space, the male bowerbird’s reedy nest is more than a resting place; it is a beautiful habitat designed to attract the female bowerbird. The bird’s natural instinct is to value his found objects by displaying them with great care. Each object brought to the nest area is highly cherished and positioned with intentionality….

This is an invitation for you to become a guardian and curator of children’s work. Celebrate and cherish their accomplishments as you would a fine piece of art. Display children’s work in attractive and beautiful ways. Be a bowerbird.”

I so appreciate you introducing me to the bower bird. I found pictures online and you are correct, it is a work of art. What a wonderful way to start a conversation about honoring children's work.

Thank you

Great article, and it's a wonderful thing to see how children recognize their accomplishments around the school room, and happily point them out. More self confidence and happiness is also instilled in each child.
