Lifting Up Care as Education
August 5, 2021
If we have a big enough “why,” we will always discover the “how.”
-Tara Semisch

Carol Garboden Murray’s new book, Illuminating Care, has been receiving much praise and positive attention, as it encourages conversation on the topic of care as education. She writes:

“Care is the making of humans. Care is the first lesson of love, connection and dependency. Care rituals demonstrate quintessential whole person learning – the integration of mind, body, heart and soul. Care is the origin story we all share.”

Murray also describes her admiration for the writing of Nel Noddings. Here’s a Noddings quote about care: “I should emphasize that caring is not just a warm, fuzzy feeling that makes people kind and likable. Caring implies a continuous search for competence.”

Illuminating Care:
The Pedagogy and Practice of Care in
Early Childhood Communities

Illuminating Care: The Pedagogy and Practice of Care in Early Childhood Communities is a powerful exploration of caregiving as a vital component of education and child development and a crucial building block of human community and society.

Carol Garboden Murray meaningfully invites educators, parents and caregivers to experience the essential strength and value of their care for young children, the artistry and integrity of it, in the routines of daily life.
