Friends are those rare people who ask how we are and then wait to hear the answer.
-Ed Cunningham
With a tip of the hat to Aretha Franklin, Exchange is proud to announce its newest offering, Respect: A Practitioner's Guide to Calm & Nurturing Infant Care & Education by Toni Christie from New Zealand.  Christie defines respect as follows:

"Respect is the key to relationships.  When you show consideration for another person, you communicate to them that they are valued.  Feeling valued contributes to a sense of trust and self-esteem and is reflected in the individual's ability to form and maintain relationships with others.

"A culture of respect in your early childhood centre will mean that interactions between teachers and children are respectful and reciprocal.  It will mean that teachers in the team show respect for one another and also that teachers and parents communicate and act respectfully."

A Practitioner's Guide to Calm & Nurturing Infant Care & Education presents timely research on respectful infant and toddler care and education seasoned with practitioner wisdom. The book explores the most important relationship for infants and toddlers in center settings - primary caregiver relationships - and illustrates how they worked easily and well when a teaching team approach was taken involving the parents.

It's a life-long practice-respect for ourselves, and respect for children, parents and co-workers. Giving others your complete and undivided attention these days can be a challenge. When you listen to someone else, and completely give yourself over to the conversation, you absorb their communication completely, like their verbal message, their nonverbal language, their facial expressions. We build truly authentic relationships being 'in the present moment' with ourselves, and with our folks in our lives, small, medium and big...;) It can be fun moment by moment...;)

I actually didn't get too far into the R-E-S-P-E-C-T article before I saw that you used "it's" for the possessive. I'm always disappointed to read typos like this in education articles. I'll go back and actually read the article now that I can get past this glaring error. Thanks for ExchangeEveryDay, BTW, which I enjoy very much.
