Intentional Infant/Toddler Caregivers
August 12, 2013
Beauty of whatever kind, in its supreme development, invariably excites the sensitive soul to tears.
-Edgar Allen Poe
Pam Schiller, one of the experts interviewed on the
VOICES DVD: Caring for Infants and Young Toddlers, talks about the challenge facing infant and toddler caregivers in her Exchange article, "
More Purposeful and Intentional Infant and Toddler Care" — finding strategies that will lead to a more purposeful learning experience for children, and provides three suggestions for moving toward more purposeful care:

  • Think of desired outcomes as you plan and move through daily routines.  This will automatically lead you in a more purposeful and intentional direction.
  • Strengthen your knowledge of the research that supports early development.  You will become more effective in selecting outcomes that are beneficial.
  • Remember that teaching is as much about following as it is about leading.  Teachers who are keen observers of children learn as much from the children as the children learn from them.

The points made in this post are very valuable. Infant teachers are making a critical impact on a child's healthy brain development that impacts learning and relationships throughout life. Having a clear understanding of how brains develop best, being intentional, respecting and following the babies lead will all greatly contribute to well developed children!
