Weather or Not
August 26, 2013
To every child – I dream of a world where you can laugh, dance, sing, learn, live in peace and be happy.
-Malala Yousafzai
In his popular book, Cultivating Outdoor Classrooms, Eric Nelson talks about the need to accommodate the weather when implementing outdoor classrooms:

"Depending on conditions outdoors, this may mean big or small changes.  In any case, weather itself has a lot to teach children, so be enthusiastic about it; turn it into something teachable.  At the very least, you need to be committed to being outdoors.  Remember these two things: first, children usually want to go outside, and second, they are strongly influenced by your attitude.  It's critical to maintain a positive attitude about being outdoors in all sorts of weather."

Outdoors is your 'other' classroom! Continue to take anecdotal notes on your children outside. Many new experiences and interactions happen outside that don't happen inside...the children know how important outside is for them...and so should we. And we need to be with the children outside, not on the sidelines supervising.
